With mere days left for the movie to release, Mersal is becoming the biggest firecracker down South. Vijay’s second movie of the year, after the mediocre Bhairavaa, is scheduled to release next week. And here we have the new poster of the movie, that has Vijay looking uber stylish. For some reason, he is holding up five fingers. Is he asking someone to wait or is he giving a countdown?
Thanks to the ongoing GST crisis in Tamil Nadu where multiplex owners have gone on strike and refused to screen new movies, there has been some confusion about whether Mersal will release next week. However industry watcher Ramesh Bala has tweeted this, “Local ET is reduced to 8% from 10% & Single Screen rates will be increased.. Final Mtg tomo.. Meanwhile, #MersalDiwali is almost confirmed!” This means that we can see Mersal on Diwali, and if the theatre owners want to be in profit, they better end the strike before the release of the movie. This new poster certainly confirms the movie will release in Diwali. In Tamil Nadu, Mersal is expected to open on 700 screens, while it has got over 350 screens in Kerala, where Vijay has a lot of fans. There is also a buzz going on that the movie has got around 3500 screens worldwide, making it the Tamil movie with the third highest screen count after Rajinikanth’s Kabali and Vikram’s I.
In Mersal, Vijay has three roles, where he plays a village chief, a doctor and a magician. He will be romancing three heroines in the movie – Nithya Menen, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Kajal Aggarwal. The movie is directed by Atlee who previously made Raja Rani and Theri, the latter also starring Vijay and was one of 2016’s blockbusters.
