Suriya’s Thaanaa Serndha Koottam had already taken the internet by a storm and became a trending discussion every time they released a song or the trailer. This adaptation of Akshay Kumar’s Special 26 has left the critics really impressed. The movie is based on the 1987 Opera House heist in Mumbai which was also the inspiration behind Neeraj Pandey’s film. Although in this one, Suriya also decides to fight corruption. The music for the film, composed by Anirudh Ravichander, is already a hit among fans but looks like the film is also striking a chord with the audience and the fans.
Ashameera Aiyappan from The Indian Express writes in her review, “Vignesh Shivn constantly tries to be fun and serious and ends up not achieving both. There are places where Thaanaa Serndha Koottam catches us off-guard. A candidate who wants to fight corruption named Sasikala; references to Ramya Krishnan’s Telugu connections, a corrupt cop named Uthaman — the irony elicits smiles. So does Vignesh Shivn’s brand of justice. Uthaman loses his middle finger — take that corruption! Thaanaa Serndha Koottam would have been definitely more enjoyable had it not channeled its inner Ramana while Suriya was channeling his inner Durai Singam. Thaanaa Serndha Koottam has several memorable faces and voices. Ramya Krishnan, Senthil, Karthik, Suresh Menon (Gautham Menon’s voice in particular) — they sure have their moments.” (ALSO READ: Thaanaa Serndha Koottam director Vignesh Shivan on working with Suriya: He is a person with a genuine social conscience)
Vishal Menon from The Hindu feels, “Never treated like hardcore drama, there’s a sure-footed ease with which Vignesh Shivan has treated the film. He’s great at transporting us to the 80’s, to a Madras where there still exists the Wellington Theatre on Mount Road. He puts words like Gold Spot, Citra and Dyanora back into our lexicon. Even the acting, especially that of Keerthi Suresh’s, has a way of taking us to the performances made unforgettable by Urvashi in the 80’s.”
Our very own critic Surendhar MK tweeted his opinion of the film. Check it out right here.
#ThaanaaSerndhaKoottam Special mention to @RJ_Balaji for coming out of his comfort zone in a brief but impactful role. He’s still played to his strengths within the confines of the role. @VigneshShivN puts him to best use once again and showcases him in a different dimension
